ABOUT EL BOQUERON
This Guatemala microlot is named after a local natural wonder. El Boquerón, or, The Big Mouth, is a narrow canyon cut through by the Rio Dulce. Its limestone walls are covered in beautiful hanging moss, and the canyon is home to blue morpho butterflies, hummingbirds and howler monkeys. Arturo Domingo Gomez was born and raised on Hacienda Joya Grande, where his father worked the farm. When his father passed away, Don Domingo inherited a portion of the land and, with a lot of effort, planted coffee across the entirety of it. Today, coffee is his main economic activity, and it enables him to support his wife and eight children.

ABOUT THE REGION
La Democracia is located in Huehuetenango, one of Guatemala’s main coffee regions. Huehuetenango is a non-volcanic coffee region, but it’s home to the highest mountain range in Central America, Los Cuchumatanes. As in many other parts of the region, coffee is the most important economic activity here. It’s produced at high altitudes and in very fertile soils. Huehuetenango also has many microclimates, thanks to the different mountains and altitudes in the region. Most notably, cold air comes from the mountain tops, and warm winds come from the Chiapas region in Mexico.
