ABOUT COLOMBIAN COFFEE
Coffee plants reached Colombia by 1790, and the first coffee crops were planted in the eastern part of the country. In 1835, the first commercial production was registered, with 2,560 green coffee bags exported from the port of Cucuta, near the border with Venezuela. According to The Orinoco Illustrated, a priest, Francisco Romero, greatly encouraged the proliferation of coffee in the department of Santander. After hearing the confessions of parishioners in the town of Salazar de la Palmas, Father Romero would require the cultivation of coffee trees as penance.

ABOUT THE REGION
Santander is in the northeast of Colombia. Its land is divided into two large geographical regions. To the west is the Magdalena River Valley — a mostly flat area with an average temperature of 84°F. The eastern side is home to the mountainous region of the eastern cordillera (a mountain range) and the spectacular Chicamocha Canyon. It is one of the most important tourist places in the department, along with the flora and fauna sanctuary Guanentá and the Afrodita waterfall.
